Most People Will Never Be Great at SEO. Read Why

Search engine optimization is a highly effective strategy if you want to grow the online presence for your business. However, many people don’t seem to be able to grasp the basics of SEO and find themselves on the wrong side of search engines.

Ever changing search engines

Google is by far the most popular search engine today. Not only do most people use Google to find information, other search engines seem to follow in the footsteps of the changes Google makes to its algorithms. It therefore makes sense to want to stay up to date with any changes Google makes. Chances are that if you optimize for Google, it will be easy optimizing for other major search engines as well.

One of the major reasons many people aren’t good at SEO is that they don’t strive to keep up to date with the changes made to search engine algorithms. Many people would prefer to stick to the methods and techniques that they’ve used for several years. However, these techniques could actually be hurting their SEO.

Things you’re doing that could be hurting your SEO

1. Link building through article submissions

Article directory submissions have for a long time been one of the easiest ways to build back links to your website. All you had to do was to submit an article to a directory and include a link back to your website. This however is no longer an effective way to build links- or not as effective as it used to be. In fact, with the recent Panda algorithm update by Google, this method of link building can result in a drop in your search engine rankings-especially if you publish your articles in directories that have already been penalized. This is because search engines will recognize links from these article directories as spam and are likely to blacklist your website.

Solution

Instead of looking for the easy way out, take the time to build legitimate back links. This means developing a relationship with bloggers and other websites of influence in your industry. Write guest posts that add value to their communities and websites. This will not only expose you to a greater audience but will also establish you as an authority in the industry. Also take time to produce quality content for your website and blogs and then promote the content widely in social media.

2. Press releases for the sake

Many people have been told that press releases are the best way to build links from authoritative sources and are great for PR. That’s all true. However, a press release that is not newsworthy will do the exact opposite.

Solution

Write your press releases about something newsworthy (new product launch, discounts/sale, change in management, change of location, rebranding, etc.) then submit them to top PR sites. You’ll be helping the website on which the press release is published by providing them with something newsworthy to publish. They in turn will help you by establishing effective media relations as well as back links.

3. Thin content

Back in the day when SEO was still ‘new’, it was ok for websites to have thin content as long as they had the right keywords. Search engines after all concentrated on finding relevant content through keywords-and how many times a keyword appeared in the content. This however is not so effective today.

Recent updates to search engine algorithms have meant that search engines are now ranking websites according to the relevance and depth of their content. Search engines are intent on providing users with relevant and useful information.

Solution

Ensure that you provide high quality content that is useful to readers. You can outsource this if you are not able to come up with the content yourself. You should also ensure that the content is long and detailed enough in order to be considered as in depth information.

Search engines love websites that provide fresh content often. These websites are indexed more often than those that have the same content for a long time.

If you apply the above solutions to your SEO campaigns you will see a significant increase in the amount of traffic coming to your websites. With properly optimized landing pages you will convert many of this traffic to buying customers.
