How Title and Meta Descriptions Can Boost Your SEO

SEO is a combination of practices, techniques, and methods that are utilized to make sure that your visitors actually enjoy your website and that search engine crawlers can properly index your site. Before you dive too deep into SEO techniques, it is a good idea to recall some of the basic SEO concepts:

  • Transparency: If the title and meta descriptions of your website state, “homemade dog food” then the content and images on the website should be about homemade dog food. Your title and your meta descriptions are about telling the user and the search engine crawlers exactly what they can expect to see on the various pages of your website. You should never use your title and meta descriptions to try to trick people into viewing your website.

  • Unique and Quality Content: In addition to being unique, it is also important that your content is engaging. No one is going to want to read a very long and detailed blog post on how to make homemade dog food if you do not sprinkle something funny or interesting into it. Try looking for statistics about manufactured dog food.

Your Title Tags

Your title tags are what will be displayed in the tabs on an individual’s browser when they visit your website. This is also what a search engine crawler is going to see first when they visit your website. Your title needs to be short, concise, and to the point. Search engines crawlers are only going to read the first 70 characters of your title. So, ideally you want to make sure your title is less than 70 characters. If your title happens to be longer than 70 characters you will want to make sure your keyword falls within the first 70 characters of the title.

Your Meta Description

When a photo is posted on a website, there are option captions under the photo to describe the photo. Adding a meta description is like adding a caption for your website. It is the couple lines of text that the search engine crawler is going to pick up and use to describe your website to people. Your meta description needs to be less than 140 characters long. You will want to make sure that it is short, sweet, and to the point. You also want to make sure that your meta description includes some of the main keywords of your website.

The end goal is that people should be able to look at your title and meta descriptions and know exactly what your website is all about.
