6 Unforgivable Sins of SEO
SEO still remains one of the most powerful marketing strategies available today. However, it still seems that it isn’t as straight forward as we’d all like it to be. Many people continue to make mistakes in SEO that cost them their rankings.
The following are six SEO sins that you ought to avoid if you want a successful SEO campaign.
1. Optimizing for the wrong keywords
When you choose keywords for your website, it is important to ensure that they are the keywords that people would normally use to search for your products or service. If they aren’t, then you will never show up on the searches when potential customers perform a search online.
Avoid using keywords that you think are popular and instead use online tools to find the most appropriate keywords. Tools such as Google Keyword Planner and Google Insights for Search will help you compare the potential of keywords by analyzing search volumes, commercial viability and competition levels.
2. Wanting immediate results
SEO is not a magic pill. There is no quick fix to get to the top of search engine rankings. SEO is a long term process. That is not to say that your website can not rank fast depending on your target keywords and industry-but that is more of an exception than the norm. Typically the results of a SEO campaign are seen over a long period (between 2- 6 months).
It is also important to remember that there are several other factors that affect the position of a website on rankings that are beyond your control e.g. what the competition is doing and changes to search engine algorithms. Getting the top position on the rankings is therefore not guaranteed. The most important thing is to get better rankings and attract more visitors to your website.
If you want to be successful at SEO, then you can’t afford to be lazy. It is absolutely important to ensure that your website’s content is updated regularly. Fresh content make your website attractive to major search engines leading to better rankings on SERPs. If search engines crawl your website several times and find that the content is still the same, they are likely not to crawl it as often. You will then find that your rankings drop as a result.
4. Keyword stuffing
Keywords are central to the success of an SEO campaign; however it is possible to overdo it. In the 90s, it was popular to repeat keywords as many times as possible and get better ranking for it. These days this is considered as a black hat SEO tactic.
Keywords are important but equally important is the quality of the content that you provide readers with. Search engines today prefer to ensure that websites provide readers with a good user experience. The content must therefore be relevant and of good quality. Keywords should therefore make up no more than 3% of the overall content.
5. Using flash only
Flash websites are very attractive. They offer a lot in the way of creativity. They can even be read and indexed by Google these days. However, it is still important not to base your entire website on flash. Not everyone uses Google to search for information and many of the other popular search engines are not able to read and index flash websites. Your website will therefore be practically invisible to a large share of the market.
6. Buying links
We all want results fast. However, there is nothing worse in the world of SEO as buying links-especially because sooner or later the search engines will catch up with you. Backlinks are important for SEO as they give a website the appearance of being supported by other people and therefore establish it as an important website. However, buying backlinks will result in penalties from search engines. Your website could be banned and all your efforts will go down the drain.
